IN THE BEGINNING,

In Your Room’s owner/designer Keryn Hughes created a small range of children’s furniture made by hand. There followed an intensive period of research and prototyping, bearing fruit in what is now iyr’s signature style – moulded plywood furniture - for adults as well as kids. All iyr furniture is made in Australia. Initially a factory in western Sydney manufactured the pieces using Keryn's designs/moulds and their presses and technical know how. Since 2011 all product has been made in a vast shed in Kyogle, in the verdant northern rivers of NSW (see picture at end). MORE RECENTLY - TRAVEL FINDS

Spring 2012 sees the launch of 'Travel Finds'. A carefully curated, small range of fashion accessories and homewares discovered by iyr designer/owner Keryn Hughes on her recent travels overseas. It's a work in progress. Each item is found, personally tried and tested by Keryn. Among the many, many fabulous finds, it's pieces that are innovative, contemporary, functional, affordable (in this context, generally less than $100), sustainable and small that make the final cut. They also have to originate in the country Keryn finds them. It's a personal and logistical decision, consistent with the approach Keryn brings to her own furniture designs. Oh, and of course Keryn has to fall in love with them, track down the designer/craftsperson on her return home and gain their approval for the product to be added to iyr's online shop. We hope you enjoy the results of Keryn's eye, passion and research.

To be clear, iyr's core business remains producing modern moulded plywood furniture for kids and adults, all designed and made in Australia. The Travel Finds initiative - fashion accessories/homewares sourced globally - is additional and in no way detracts from our focus on furniture. IYR now = Furniture + Finds. Different products, different provenance, same contemporary design aesthetic.

In designing for all ages, IYR often makes pieces that are interchangeable between settings/age brackets. This is part of our philosophy – to combine the use of environmentally sensitive materials with designs that enable the one piece to be used in numerous ways.

FOR THE LOVE OF PLYWOOD

Cross-lamination in the making of plywood is responsible for giving us a material with remarkable strength and stability that is also light. It also has strong environmental credentials (see FAQ for elaboration).
